qimage.gif (1004 bytes)Can I speed up the Amiga by replacing the CPU?

aimg.gif (1009 bytes)The best way to speed up your older Amiga, is by installing a better CPU, it is best to buy the expansion, but many people have had good luck with installing the next fastest MHz CPU or the Next family CPU. For example going from the 68000 to the 68010 in Amiga 500's and 2000's.

You can get faster performance clock speeds, by installing a faster 680xx rated at higher MHz. However you then have to build a divider from the master clock and feed the CPU clock pin. You can get problems reading from floppy drives and with RS232, but may be worth the speed increase.  You also can possibly damage your Amiga, so it again is recommended that you purchase the CPU upgrade rather than doing it yourself.

The  Surgery department does have more information on OVERCLOCKING your Amiga.
