Amiga Clones
What
is an Amiga clone?
When we talk about a
"clone", we are talking about a computer that will run Amiga software, has the
Amiga "chipset", or is made to be compatible with the Amiga, but is not built by
Commodore or by Amiga Inc. There are, or have been, several companies that have paid for
'licensing' of the Amiga technologies, so that they could create their own Amiga
Compatible systems.
What
can I do with an Amiga Clone?
There are many different
Amiga clones, most of which use the Amiga 1200 or 4000 motherboard. You can do most
everything with a clone, that you could do with an Amiga.
There is a system called BoXeR, that is different, and it uses an entirely redesigned
motherboard, and promises 100% compatibility. Other products may not guarantee 100%
compatibility, but most problems you will run into are with older or poorly written
software.
Can
a clone run ALL software?
No. Even real Amiga
computers have trouble running ALL software, so it depends on each system and the software
you have installed on it. I would expect at least a little incompatibility with any Amiga
clone.
Which
is better a REAL Amiga or a clone Amiga?
This is a difficult
question. Actually, it depends on YOU. What do you want for your Amiga? If a REAL Amiga
doesn't have what you need, but a clone does, choose the clone. If a CLONE is too much
computer or won't do what you need, but a REAL Amiga fits better, choose the Amiga. I am
really waiting to see what the BoXeR is like, it sounds like a real improvement. I also
wonder if it will be compatible with the ZICO specification. Imagine PCI slots, and USB on
an Amiga running a 733 MHz PPC G4!!!
The ZICO is a new standard for the next Amiga motherboard and you will want to check it
out. The standard is developed by Amiga, but the actual computer will only be available as
a clone.
