Once you appreciate how many web sites there are, you may start to
wonder how you'll ever find the information you are interested in.
The easiest way to find information on a particular subject is to use a special kind of web site called a 'search engine' or 'search directory'. A search engine is simply an index of the content of other web sites. The biggest search engines on the web keep an up-to-date index of many millions of web sites. To use a search engine, you enter a word or phrase to find. The engine will then search through its huge index of links and information, to find what you are looking for. You will then be provided with a list of links to different web sites, each of which has a short description. All you have to now is click on a likely looking link to visit that site. Some search engines contain web sites that have been selected by human editors. Others automatically scan the web for new and updated sites to index. Many search engines allow any user to add their own site. |
