Iomega endorses and supports the use of their products with only those operating systems listed on the product's retail packaging. Any operating system not listed on the retail packaging or in the product documentation may or may not have been tested or be compatible with the Iomega product

At this time, Iomega does not support the use of its products with the Amiga computer. If you are using Iomega products with an operating system not supported by Iomega, Iomega can not guarantee technical support or warranty services for these products. However, in response to customer requests, Iomega may provide some limited troubleshooting for unsupported systems at the assumed risk of the user

This limited troubleshooting information may be helpful, but has not been tested by Iomega and therefore cannot be guaranteed. The user assumes all risks associated with following, relying on, or using this limited troubleshooting information

STEP ONE - Install the Zip SCSI drive

  1. Turn off power off to the computer and all external devices

  2. Connect the SCSI cable from the external SCSI connector on the rear of the Zip drive to the external SCSI connector on the SCSI adapter card

  3. Enable termination on the first and last devices connected to the SCSI chain and disable termination to any other devices

  4. Set the SCSI ID. Make sure that all devices connected to the SCSI ribbon cable have different SCSI ID numbers. A switch found on the rear of the Zip drive sets the SCSI ID

Note: The Zip drive can only use SCSI IDs 5 and 6

  5. Set the SCSI card to bootable by either setting a jumper on the card or changing the boot option in the SCSI card BIOS

Note: This must be done even when you do not intend to boot from the drive. If you are not sure how to set this parameter, contact the card manufacturer. Booting from the Zip drive is not recommended

STEP TWO - Format the Zip disk

Warning: Formatting destroys any information on the disk. Before performing a format on a disk make sure you have a backup copy of any information on the disk you may need

  1. Turn the power on to the computer and to the Zip drive. If you have an external Zip drive, turn the drive power on before you power on the computer

  2. Insert the Zip disk into the drive

  3. Locate HDToolBox on your system or refer to your Amiga documentation for installation. HDToolBox should be in your tools directory under Workbench: [HD0:]

  4. Select HDToolBox menu, choose Menu and then select Information

  5. Once inside the Icon Information window, click on New and enter the SCSI card adapter driver as shown:

    • For Commodore cards type SCSI_DEVICE_NAME= scsi.device

    • For GVP cards type SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpscsi.device

    • For more than one card from the same manufacturer type SCSI_DEVICE_NAME= 2nd.gvpscsi.device

Note: If you don't know the name of the device driver, contact the manufacturer of your SCSI card

  6. Press Enter to place the device driver name into the Tool Types window and then choose Save

  7. Run HDToolBox by double clicking on the HDToolBox Icon. The Zip drive light will now flicker for a minute while HDToolBox scans the disk

  8. Choose Continue if HDToolBox warns you of changes

  9. You should now be at the main HDToolBox screen. Select the Zip drive from the window under Hard Drives in System. The Zip drive will be listed under addresses as number 5 or 6

Note: The first time a format is performed, status will be listed as Unknown

  10. Select Change Drive Type, Define new drive type, and then Read Configuration From Drive

Important operation notes:

  1. AmigaDOS and removable drives. If removable disks have different volume names, AmigaDOS may not be able to recognize a new disk. To avoid this problem, give all removable disks used in a specific drive the same volume name. If you must use disks with different volume names, you may need to reboot your computer after changing disks

  2. Partitioning and removable disks. Partitioning of any type of removable disk is not recommended. AmigaDOS defaults to multiple partitions on larger disks. Partitioning of removable disks can cause problems with changing disks and keeping partition sizes synchronized from disk to disk

  3. Disks and low-level formats. All Zip disks have spare tracks available for use during low-level formats. If a disk begins generating read/write errors, a low-level format will replace any bad sectors on the disk with the available spare sectors. This process assures an error free disk over the life of the Zip disk. Low-level formats can be performed using the HDToolBox utility
